  • Businesses look towards European courts ahead of Brexit ( 28th April 2018 )
The results of a survey from Thomson Reuters Legal has found that 35% of the business involved in their research have already decided to change their contracts to ensure that disputes are not heard in the UK but rather inside the European Union. This throws into question whether London is considered still the global centre for dispute resolution. London courts have become increasingly reliant on international litigants. Jim Leason from Reuters states 'Brexit uncertainty is causing concern as businesses want clarity over their trading arrangements for the future.' 'The English legal system and professions that support it are major contributors to the UK economy. Selecting English law and the English courts has long been the preference for international commercial arrangements.' • The New Brexit Secretary ( 24th July 2018 )
Dominic Raab’s new appointment now brings the number of ex-solicitors in the cabinet to a total of three, that of James Brokenshire (ex-Linklaters) and David Gauke (the lord chancellor). Raab has been seen to routinely picking the same Pret a Manger lunch everyday, chicken and bacon baguette, a superfruit pot, and a vitamin volcano smoothie. At a recent Conservative thinktank event, there was humour in applauding his freedom to chose.
  • Conveyancing ( 23rd July 2018 )
As a result of the cost of fraud on registered land to the HM Land Registry commission, it is recommending that a 'duty of care' is imposed on conveyancers. Those that are compliant in following the new directions will not held liable. However for those conveyancers that are not, the commission would look to recover the costs. 'Our reforms ensure that the financial consequences of fraud fall on the minority of conveyancers who do not exercise appropriate due diligence. They will also encourage best practice in the profession, and, by providing a standard set of checks, give clarity and certainty to conveyancers about their obligations in respect of identity checks,' the commission says. • Employment Law ( 22nd July 2018 )
According at ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Services's) there has been a rise in the number of claims at employment tribunals. The figure is up nearly 30% from last year. This has been seen as a direct consequence of the Supreme Court’s ruling that tribunal fees were unlawful and scrapping them. Fees in 2013 were introduced at £160 but quickly rose in some cases up to £1200. It was argued that this restricted employees, particularly those on low incomes, from getting their right to justice.
